Heritage Travel Comes to Life: Walking in the footsteps of a Great Grandmother, her travel journal in my backpack.
Photos: Day one, just off the plane, walking along a bustling streetscape in Roma following the footsteps of her great grandmother. Mosaic floor at Pompeii, House of the Faun excavated from the ashes of Mount Vesuvius eruption in AD 79. My Grandmother’s travel journal.
As we enter winter and more time at home, I have been looking back on summers past when travel was an adventure. 2018, as school break began, my husband, my girls and I set off on our first adventure to Italy - Rome. I was lucky enough to trace the footsteps of my grandmother and to have my family with me. I had copied some pages from my Grandmothers travel journal from 1967. As we walked through her journal to the Pantheon, the Colosseum, St. Peter’s Basilica, Naples and Pompeii we discovered cities and people steeped in history.
A memory she had documented: “Pompeii - hard to believe. A bustling culture’s memory captured in time.” It is empowering and amazing to see people and culture preserved and lived amidst, reminding us all that moments in time and space teach us of our past and can guide and inspire us toward our future. I look forward to the days ahead when we can do more heritage travel. Curiosity and adventure - it’s in our DNA.
